The story

Powerful, regal and magnificent, the Sea Eagle is king of the bird kingdom. Soaring above the coastline with its huge wingspan, it commands respect and awe from everything it surveys. It is also to be feared, with stories of this huge bird swooping down to pluck lambs and even infant children from the ground – including one Icelander who is still alive to tell the tale. But the Sea Eagle is also a protector, fierce in the defence of its nest and its young.

The Shield of Wings offers you the protection and warmth of this king of the birds.

About the product

The Shield of Wings blanket is knitted using 100% Icelandic sheep's wool and the ends are finished with a blanket stitch. Inspired by the majesty of the Sea Eagle, the layered design allows you to wear the blanket across your shoulders, in tribute to its huge wingspan. At 2.5 metres, Shield of Wings can also be used around the home as a dramatic bedspread or sofa throw. As with all Vík Prjónsdóttír designs, the Shield of Wings is the product of a design and production process based on working closely with traditional Icelandic knitwear factories and producers.

The material

Icelandic sheep have evolved over more than 1,000 years in complete isolation, influenced only by the harsh climate and rugged landscape. This has helped to create a wool with a unique combination of fibres, unlike any other in the world.

The soft, fine inner fibres provide insulation and are strongly resistant to the cold. Meanwhile, the tough outer fibres are long and glossy, making them water resistant.

So: hardy, lightweight, warm and water-repellant. And, as the sheep's fleece grows every year as they graze in nature, this is a truly renewable resource.
